Nicole Kidman arrived in Venice to make two things very clear when it comes to fashion: a black dress is always a good idea – and if your shoes are comfortable, everything is infinitely better.
Nicole has proved her point with just one look – that is, the one that she wore to arrive in the city of canals and take her first walk in front of the media.

So, onto her first outfit of this year's Venice Film Festival (of which there are two, so far). In fact, it's not her chic black dress that particularly caught our eye – though the Bottega Veneta linen number is seriously gorgeous – it was her sandals that are worth an even closer look.
Instead of a – perhaps more expected – pair of stilettos or pumps, Nicole opted for a pair of ‘fishtail heels’ in white and quilted fabric. So called because their shape is similar to that of (yep, you guessed it) a fish's tail, they offer more comfort and stability than spikier heels. A wise choice, Nicole!
And, bonus – since the base of the heel is also wider, fishtail heels are much easier to walk in than stilettos.
Since Nicole Kidman made a wardrobe change to step onto the red carpet at a screening of her latest movie Babygirl later that day (in a Schiaparelli Couture gown and a pair of more classic black pumps, no less), we can see why she chose comfort this time around.
