Halloween may still be weeks away, but that hasn't stopped TikTok from forward-planning costumes and Halloween makeup inspo in a major way. The hashtag #halloween2024 already has just shy of a billion views with users declaring which trends they're getting behind and the key costumes they “better see this year.”
As for us? We're invested. Because, for many beauty lovers, Halloween is the makeup highlight of the year. And, it's the main occasion where it's permissible (coughs preferable) to decorate our faces with clever designs, special effects and layers of face paint.
Whether you want yours to be creepy, gory and covered with fake blood, or cutesy and adorable, we've got all the inspiration you need.
As for this year's headliners, Sabrina Carpenter's collab with our favourite moody muse, Jenna Ortega, for her music video, Taste, reads more like a short horror film and has multiple references we can pull from. There's the knife in Jenna's eye (need ya, special fx), or her subsequent creepy-nurse eye patch and villain red lipstick.

Or there's the gothic glam of the duo's Death Becomes Her Hollywood waves, defined makeup and birdcage veils if you don't want to look too “Halloween”.

Elsewhere for Jenna, we're still very much stanning Wednesday Addams – her dark eye bags and her jet black pigtails and we expect to see lots of Beetlejuice references, with Jenna's character, Astrid Deetz, an icon. If pink and purple is more your colour, Bridgerton is heavy on the coquette aesthetic. It calls for silky pink eyeshadows and blushes and cutesy hair accessories like tiaras and bows.

For gory girls, vampires will forever be on the agenda when it comes to Halloween, so dig out your blood red lipstick, some fake blood and scan Amazon for some vampire fangs to stick over your canines.

The ‘90s and '00s is still an awesome playground for finding cute references (see: bandanas, butterfly clips and baby braids) and some of this year’s enduring beauty trends – like the Balletcore and Brat girl – play perfectly into Halloween makeup trends.
Fairycore references will also feature heavily (as it has done for the past couple of years) and we expect to see a fair few angels and corpse brides, too.
