The 'garçon cut' is one of the most requested chops right now for girls who prefer boyish style cuts, and we spotted it everywhere on influencers at the AW24 fashion shows.

What is the garçon cut?

French for “boy”, the “garçon cut” taps up a traditionally boyish crop, made popular among French film stars like Audrey Tautou and Jean Seberg. Shorter than a bob but longer than some pixie cuts, it features longer lengths through the top section of hair to create a voluminous, slanting fringe. It's composed of numerous irregular layers around the ears, leaving the nape and neck area uncluttered.

Who can wear the garçon cut?

Really, this style can work for all hair types. For straight hair, it can sit flatter and angular like a traditional pixie, but the chop also looks stunning with longer, textured layers and works particularly well on thick, curly and wavy hair.

Why wear the garçon cut?

It's cute, it's casual, it's carefree – but it makes a very self-assured statement. A garçon cut takes some bravery to pull off as you're cutting away any safety blanket strands, but it can help to spotlight beautiful bone structure and add a little more daring personality.

How to wear the garçon cut?

The 'garçon cut' suits all different face shapes (although it works particularly well for oval and heart-shaped faces) and it can work with different hair types, provided you tailor it correctly. “If your hair is very straight and fine, you should outline it with scissors. If you have a lot of hair you should unload it with a razor,” says María Baras, director of Cheska hair salon. “In this type of haircut, details are everything, like the sideburns and bangs,” she adds. Despite being boyish, the cut can feel extremely sexy, feminine and elegant as it exposes the nape of the neck. "Short hair can even be sexier than long hair because it frames the features and can also soften them thanks to the shading effect of the fringe or sideburns," says María. Here's four more of our favourite ways to wear it below…
