As far as Greek islands go, Mykonos is unavoidable. I mean that in the way that your most glamorous, effervescent friend is unavoidable. She's undeniably beautiful, she's the last on the dance floor, she tires you out – but oh, is she fun.
If you've already had the pleasure of visiting this vibrant Cycladic gem, you'll know what I mean. And if you haven't, then you've likely seen the posts on your FYP – lively beach clubs set against the glittering Aegean sea packed with equally glittering clientele. But Mykonos was a hotspot for summering A-listers, artists and aristocracy long before social media was even a concept. Back in the ‘60s, it was the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren who flocked to the island for its progressive, laidback appeal (which also saw Mykonos become a popular LGBT+ destination, a badge it still wears proudly today). Now, celebrities including Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton holiday here – and it’s easy to see why.

Which part of Mykonos is best to stay in?
Mykonos is a relatively small island – only around 33 square miles – so you're never far from the action. Many of Mykonos's best hotels are found clustered in the southwest corner of the island, in and around Ornos Beach, which is around 15 minutes' taxi ride to Mykonos Town (Chora) and the famous Windmills of Mykonos.
If you want to stay in the very heart of the party scene, look to Mykonos Theoxenia or Bohème, located right in Chora.

Kalesma
Best for: Honeymooners.

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Kalesma is one of those hotels that leaves you concerned for all future holidays because it seems impossible to match. I audibly gasped on entering our sea-view suite with its private infinity pool (this is the island's only hotel to boast a private heated pool in every room), which wrapped around our bedroom and boasted unobstructed views over the yacht-lined bay below. Elsewhere on our private terrace and bougainvillea-lined garden, sun-loungers made for peaceful pool-side reading, and a feast of fresh fruit and poached eggs was served at the poolside dining area on our final morning. There's also an al fresco kitchen where a private chef can whip up a sunset barbecue on request, perfect for couples or friends celebrating a special occasion.
The hotel's 27 suites and two villas – all white-washed sanctuaries cascading down the hillside, resembling a traditional Mykonian village – feel like quiet, secluded retreats from the parasol-lined Ornos Beach below. The peace of the place makes you feel a world away from party-loving Chora town, even though it's only 10 minutes in a taxi for when you do fancy painting the town red. Do as your fellow guests do and emerge only as the sun begins to dip behind the horizon: first, for a sunset cocktail at the Aloni outdoor lounge, built around a cosy fire pit; then for dinner at Pere Ubu, where it's best to order a variety of dishes to share (particular highlights included the zingy heirloom tomato salad and succulent sea bream fillet).

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐I had the pleasure of visiting Casa Cook in early July, just as Mykonos's stream of stylish guests were beginning to convene for high season, and it seemed as though I had the place to myself. As is the nature of a well-designed boutique hotel: it feels like your home away from home. The intimacy of Casa Cook is helped by its size – just 26 rooms and suites – and the fact it's adults only, making it ideal for a romantic retreat.
Rooms range from a ‘timeless classic’ to a private-pool villa which sleeps three people. We stayed in a private pool suite for two which boasted beautiful sea views and an outdoor sofa, hammock and king-size sun lounger for relaxing. Our room was spacious and contemporary, with white walls, natural materials and raw wooden furnishings. This sleek design is continued throughout the hotel; I often found myself thinking its sugar-cube white walls and exposed beams belonged on the cover of a glossy architectural magazine.
At Ble restaurant, overlooking the hotel's pool with views stretching across the Aegean, Chef Giorgos cooks up a storm. Plates are made for sharing, whether it's a feta-loaded Greek salad, homemade tzatziki with warm, just-baked pitta, or melt-in-your-mouth tuna bonito. The star of the show was undoubtedly a buttery lobster pappardelle in a rich, herb-laced tomato sauce served with a cool glass of local white wine (which nursed us back to life after a night spent partying at high-octane cababret-come-club, Lío Mykonos).
Considering the island's expensive reputation, Casa Cook is a must-book for high-end, luxury accommodation on the more affordable end of the scale.
Mykonos Theoxenia
Best for: Party lovers.

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Mykonos Theoxenia, part of the Design Hotels group, was the island's first luxury hotel when it opened in 1960, and you can feel the old-school glamour as soon as you stroll through its retro-inspired interiors, a refreshing alternative to the smooth-white Cycladic cubic aesthetic. Its 50 well-sized rooms balance the hotel's heritage with modern decor, and some premium suites have a private balcony pool with postcard-pretty sea views.
Unlike many of its luxury competitors which are dotted along Ornos Bay in the southwest, Mykonos Theoxenia couldn't be more centrally located. Here, you're right in the heart of Mykonos Town – AKA the party scene – and the famous Mykonos Windmills are practically on your doorstep.
When you're done exploring, head back to the hotel's cacti-fringed pool and sip a sundowner cocktail, as we imagine guests Jackie O and Brigitte Bardot may have done in the swinging '60s.

Think stone-clad floors and walls, tonal white and beige interiors, and natural pale wood accents, with an exceptionally attentive team and an olive tree-lined swimming pool. It boasts 10 suites and 25 rooms, most of which have either a jacuzzi, or a private plunge pool, so you'd be forgiven for never wanting to leave the hotel. If you can drag yourself away, the bright blue water and golden sand of Ornos Beach (and its beach clubs) is an easy 5 minute walk down the hill, while bustling Mykonos Town is just a 10 minute taxi ride away.
For an extra dose of indulgence, book in at Kensho Ornos's renowned cave spa, where you'll find two treatment rooms, a steam bath room, an indoor Jacuzzi, tropical rain beds and a hair and beauty salon (I highly recommend the 90-minute Adventurous Himalayan Rain Body Cleanse for your smoothest-ever skin).
Book an outside table to watch the sunset over dinner, where traditional Greek dishes are levelled-up with contemporary flair. Don't miss the Aegan tuna on a bed of avocado with a zingy mango compote, or the blissfully rich langoustine risotto with feta mousse.

Location-wise, you're close enough to Mykonos Town that throwing on your party-wear and heading for a night out isn't a slog, but the hotel still feels peaceful and quiet.
The quiet beach is just steps away and the food at Mediterranean Nama restaurant, boasting sunset views over Delos, was an undeniable highlight – but the Althea Spa is the real jewel in Mykonos Grand's crown. There's a whole host of rejuvenating treatments, from luxury facials to body and beauty treatments, a semi-caved Thalasso pool with views over the Aegean, and various stunning treatment rooms and relaxation areas.

Perched atop the hillside with views of the historic harbour – and just a 10 minute stroll from Mykonos town – Deos is one of those boutique gems you know you'll come back to time and time again.
Each of the hotel's 42 rooms come with private terraces, hot tubs or pools, with picture-perfect panoramic views that stretch over the Aegean towards the horizon. Guests can enjoy Greek and Mediterranean food at the hotel’s à la carte restaurant, Epico, which also boasts beautiful views over Chora and the sea. There's a pool and lounge area for poolside snacks and cocktails, where the bar backs onto the hotel's impressive infinity pool.
