I began my quest for the best family hotels in London last year, realising we’ve all been there: you arrive at a hastily booked hotel in London, children in tow, to discover that there’s no cot in the room, the only highchair on-site is broken and the whole place is covered in priceless art that is all too tempting for sticky little fingers. Yet travelling to the capital with the whole family needn’t be stressful – in fact, it can be positively spoiling, particularly if your hotel has not only the basics covered but thoughtful additions, too. Think: baby toiletries, free teddy bears and children’s activities.
And the great news is that just because you’re a parent now, you don’t need to sacrifice on style. After all, in 2024 there’s a plethora of chic, luxury hotels in London going above and beyond to cater to their mini VIPs. Some of London’s oldest and most famous hotels – names like Claridge’s, The Goring and The Ritz – all offer incredible amenities for children, while artsy new additions to the capital’s boutique hotel scene, like the Mayfair Townhouse and The Ned, have also factored in their youngest guests’ needs.
Children’s menus aren’t just fish and chips or chicken nuggets: instead, they are artfully designed by top nutritionists, reflecting changing tastes in food. Toiletries provided aren’t just for adults, either, with Child’s Farm, Waleda Baby and Bamford Baby stocked in bathrooms – alongside baby baths, children’s toothpaste and nappies in the right size. These rooms have nappy bins – not just bathroom bins – to avoid an unnecessary stink, and many have bottle-warmers (of the Tommee Tippee variety) and modern cots like Snuzpod or Stokke. There are Disney afternoon teas, movie nights, children’s entertainers and experienced – rather than begrudging – babysitters. Plus, well-thought out activities and excursions to stage shows and museums. At five-star hotels, there’s no need for children to be ‘seen and not heard’.

Your children might prefer to go camping to staying in a luxe London hotel. Luckily, at The Landmark, you can do both. The family rooms, which accommodate two adults and two children, feature beautiful tippees for your little adventurers, with a head-torch included for extra authenticity. Children will immediately gravitate towards the teepee set up in the corner of the room, and they’ll find plenty of treasure inside, from jigsaws to toys, age-appropriate books to a rubber duck. All the gear – including bottle warmers, sterilisers, Cocci Nella toiletries and baby bathtubs – is readily available, and there are a handful of two and three bedroom interconnecting rooms with private hallways, living areas and dressing rooms, perfect for large groups. Parents can take children to the swimming pool during the designated family sessions, as well as the Kids Club, which operates during school holidays. Better yet, book a babysitter for the night and luxuriate in the Green Bar before sampling two Michelin-starred Alex Dilling’s tasting menu.

It might be difficult to imagine children within the confines of one of London’s slickest five-star hotels, but rather happily for mum and dad, sprogs are welcome at the Bulgari. Something of a disruptor when it arrived on the scene a few years ago, it’s become known for its glamorous subterranean spa in particular – do try to snatch a few hours here if you can bargain with your other half over childcare duties. One easy way to keep your kids entertained is through the citywide treasure hunt the hotel organises, which starts with a surprise personalised invitation and ends with a private dinner. There’s also Harrods’ toy floor to explore, plus the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and V&A down at South Kensington. With interconnecting rooms, it’s ideal for getting a little peace and quiet when you want to – perhaps with a long luxuriate in the bath or some late-night room service when the children are asleep. Your very lucky plus-ones will also leave with a Bulgari backpack, luggage tag and colouring book – amidst other plunder.

The Langham is ideally located in the West End, close to the likes of Hamleys, Green Park and Madame Tussauds, and is one of the most family-friendly hotels in London. The magic begins from check-in, when children receive their own Theodore teddy bear and matching loungewear, as well as an activity booklet that encourages them to explore the hotel, collecting stamps from hotel staff on the way. There are Osme organic toiletries in the gloriously-spacious family suites, plus bathrobes and slippers, as well as tents, if your child is in the camping obsession stage. Encapsulating England to perfection, the Four Seasons Park Lane has one of London’s most famous addresses, and is eternally popular with tourists thanks to its glamorous decor and enviable location, a stone’s throw from the shops of Oxford Street and Regent Street, like Hamleys and the Disney Store. As many families have flown here from far and wide (you can reach it direct from Heathrow on the Piccadilly Line), it’s no surprise that it has its kids-friendly offering down to a tee: think Tommee Tippee bottle sterilisers and warmers, nappy bins, a baby bath, baby-sized robes and towels, Child’s Farm toiletries, nappies, baby toothpaste… the list is endless.

The Holborn location is probably our favourite, thanks to its proximity to all of central London’s top attractions, as well as its sprawling lounge and restaurant area on the ground floor, which has great kid-friendly menus. Be sure to quote ‘Tiny Hox’ when booking to ensure that you receive your much-desired welcome tote – inside you’ll find not only a family-friendly map, but also a colouring book and pencils. The rooms (interconnecting available on request) will have everything you need in terms of bottle warmers and bath essentials, and there’s even freezer space for milk and food if you need it.

You and your children will definitely have bragging rights in the playground after a holiday at The Ritz. Stays are designed to create cherished memories: after all, who would forget their first ‘grown up’ afternoon tea in the Palm Court? The dress code is suspended for under 16s, but we’d still dress up – there’s a mini-me version of the adult menu in child-appropriate portions, and even a special decaffeinated tea designed by the hotel’s designated ‘tea master’. Other parent-pleasing flourishes included in the ‘Kidz@TheRitz’ programme for ‘Very Important Kids’ are distracting DVDs, books and games consoles, welcome gifts and toiletries, not to mention daily surprise treats at turndown. Outside of the hotel, Buckingham Palace is a short stroll away through Green Park, while London Zoo, Madame Tussauds, the British Museum, Hamleys toy store et all are very close by. What’s more, the Hall Porters can even drive your little one around in a Rolls-Royce to show them the sights. The only possible downside to a stay here is that your offspring might get a bit too accustomed to the high life…

The phrase ‘if these walls could talk’ was surely created for a place like Claridge’s. And if they could, they’d describe not only Hollywood starlets behaving badly, but also happy children behaving well, and the two coexisting harmoniously beside each other. That’s because despite being possibly the most famous five-star hotel in London, Claridge’s is amazingly accommodating of little ones – treating them very much as equals. Case in point: the sweet kids-sized Claridge’s umbrella, provided as part of the ‘welcome pack’ for young guests, and the choice of ‘comic’ to be delivered alongside the grown-ups’ morning papers. There’s even warm milk and a cookie as part of the turn down service. It would be criminal to not try the famous Claridge’s Fried Chicken or Lobster Wellington while you’re here – if you want to enjoy either in maximum peace, then babysitting is £60 for the first four hours. You can probably squeeze in a cocktail at Le Fumoir after.

As a family-run hotel for four generations, it’s perhaps unsurprising that The Goring has thought about everything when it comes to child-friendly stays – so it's time to level-up your stays at the Premier Inn. Indeed, its youngest guests are dubbed ‘V.I. (little) Ps’, and are treated as such throughout their stay. Families as large as six can stay in interconnecting rooms or family suites, with bath toys, changing mats and toiletries all provided – plus a ‘Baa-bara’ sheep cuddly toy and colouring book and other activities. Your comfort isn’t scrimped on, either, with fine Italian linen and Egyptian cotton robes and slippers, plus 24-hour room service for when you just can’t face leaving the room. Oh, and every bedroom has a bathroom, so if you want to escape for a well-deserved soak, you can. Little ones love to explore the fabulous Goring Gardens, and there’s also a dressing-up box (outfits include London icons like Beefeaters and policeman) and Bedtime Story library to peruse in reception.

The Ned
You would be forgiven for thinking that one of London’s most famous drinking and dining spots – with its numerous bars, restaurants and a speakeasy – would be far from accommodating to young children. But you’d be wrong. In fact, The Ned goes out of its way to cater to the next generation of members, with Child’s Farm toiletries (including a massage oil – lucky them!), sizable cots with clever built-in changing mats and Tommee Tippee nappy bins, as well as a Ned ted to take home. There are Stokke Tripp Trapp highchairs in all the restaurants but no kids menus, but staff are very happy to serve child-friendly portions. The rooftop swimming pool welcomes children at certain times, and there’s no doubt diddy dancers will love the live music in the bar, but it’s probably best to leave them to it after 8pm. While there aren’t an abundance of children staying at The Ned, those that do are well looked after.

Children will be delighted by the Treehouse Hotel, which is a storybook den come to life: think bamboo walls, hanging greenery, cosy blankets and colourful throws, not to mention a bow and arrow or two (sadly, decoration only). Young guests can stay in their own in-room teepee, whether in with their parents or in an interconnecting room. There are books, board games and a Paddington Bear teddy to bribe younger guests into good behaviour, plus cookies and milk. Located a stone’s throw from Oxford Street, and a few Tube stops from Covent Garden, it’s ideal for exploring central London – and the views from its rooftop restaurant are perfect for playing a game of spot-the-landmark.

One of the most stylish new hotels in London city, the Mayfair Townhouse is all English eccentricity and refinement, with its Dandy Bar being the beating heart of the hotel. Younger guests can enjoy the ‘Dandy Fox Treasure Trail’, a specially designed treasure hunt that takes in some of London’s most Monopoly Board-esque locales. The concierge can arrange an amazing schedule of activities, too, from horse riding in Hyde Park, to a private pod on the London Eye. Bedrooms are open plan and interconnecting rooms are available on request, and babysitter allowing, you can hopefully duck out for a cocktail or two in the Dandy Bar – the Mr Bosie is our favourite.
